Hot Property Beautiful Cottage Built By Famed Aviator Charles Lindbergh

If you want privacy, serenity and
to own a piece of history in the
heart of Darien, then the cottage at
21 Tokeneke Trail is for you.
The exquisite cottage — built by
famed aviator Charles Lindbergh
in the early 1960s — is on the property
where Lindbergh and his
wife, Anne, raised their five children.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity
to own quite an historic
piece of history,” said Halstead
Property Connecticut’s Julie Bauer,
one of three co-listing agents.
The Lindbergh’s purchased the
main house on the property in the
1940s and built the cottage 20 years
later. “They decided to build the
cottage and subdivide the property,”
Bauer said. “They sold the
larger home, which was on 1.25
acres, and kept the cottage.” The
cottage, Bauer said, “was talked
about as the aviator’s favorite spot
on their Connecticut estate. They
had a trailer on the cottage property
that had been a gift from Henry
Ford. They loved the spot for the
privacy and tranquility.”
The cottage, which sits on 2.844
acres, is currently owned by Mark
and Margaux Maybell. The Maybell’s
will keep the main house, but
are looking for a good neighbor for
the cottage, Bauer said. The Maybell’s
updated the cottage, including
the kitchen, in 2003 and 2004.
“The land has 495 feet of waterfront
on Scott’s Cove looking out to
Long Island Sound,” Bauer said.
“The views are south and southeast
overlooking Scott’s Cove.
There is an abundant of wildlife
including thousands of birds.”
The cottage — which was coined
“Tellina” for a seashell by the
Lindbergh’s - has three levels.
The lower level, Bauer said, has
a bedroom/bathroom that could be
used as a den or family room. The
lower level also has a laundry
room and connects to a two-car
garage. The cars, Bauer noted, go
straight in and not side by side.
And, the lower level also features
— of all things — a bomb shelter
built in the 1960s. “It’s a unique
historical feature,” Bauer said.
The main level has a kitchen, living room and dining area inside
the kitchen.
The living room, Bauer said, has
a large picture window that looks
out onto Scott’s Cove. The living
room also boasts a wood burning
fireplace and a built-in bench for
The kitchen has Carrera marble
countertops, Sub-Zero refrigerator,
Farmhouse sink, Wolf range
and offers a “little alcove for seating and the dining table,” Bauer
The master bedroom, also located
on the main level, has three
sunny windows with water views.
“They’ve kept the bathroom in the
master in the 1960s style just as the
Lindbergh’s designed it,” she said.
The second level has two bedrooms
and built-in dressers and
shelving and deep closets for plenty
of storage. “Both bedrooms are
large enough for two single beds
and the bedroom share a full bathroom,”
Bauer said.
The cottage is located within the
private Tokeneke Association.
